Tax and shipping will be calculated at checkout." and the 16GB "Ships in 4 - 5 weeks. Tax and shipping will be calculated at checkout." Not too good for those wanting this for Christmas but at least Google is doing it the right way now.

Re: Why Delta Airlines and Customer Satisfaction is an Oxymoron

it's not just Delta - Most airlines are now doing this.. some exceptions are Jet Blue & Southwest.. but they can't get you to all the places you might want to visit... However, it still suffers from the basic video problem regarding the difficulty of inserting updates, indexing, adding supporting documents etc. You typically see a batch of videos done when a company starts using Youtube but soon the novelty wears off. I feel that video is but one tool in the knowledge transfer challenge and it should not be thought of as a standalone solution rather a part of a more holistic offering that included video, how to guides, knowledge tidbits, PDF's etc.

Re: STOP Producing User Manuals! The application of a SaaS model is interesting. Off to research the tool in more detail.

What do you feel the role of youtube is regarding video instructions? I did not see that explicitly mentioned vs. general video.

Re: iCal Floating Time Zones – What/Why?

Don,
I have exactly the same problem. I am moving to the CLOUD!!!! Maybe….

Update on the move to the cloud: For me there are two parts to this effort...one is speeding up my current Macbook and the other is moving where my files are located.

My first step was to clean out my laptop in preparation for adding a Solid State Disk (SSD). The latest Macbook Air's only have SSD's - and they are soldered on the motherboard so the Air...although nice..is kind of a dead end in that respect. You can never never add more space...just like the iPad.

I am kind of waiting for the next iteration of Macbook Pro so I decided to beef up my current Macbook(MB) circa 2008 with an SSD to speed it up and emulate a Macbook Air. To do that, I had to reconfigure my system so that most of my bulk data was off the laptop leaving MAC OSX Lion, core applications and some data there. My plan was to add a 120GB SSD/Flash Drive to replace my 500GB traditional hard disk on my MB Well, getting rid of data off of a laptop is like losing weight...it's hard work and there are no "tricks" to be had. I found I had a glut of information that had accumulated over time...multiple copies of PDF's, video and music(big space eaters as you know), handy backups of backups etc.

The other problem...I had to try 3 different SSD's before I found one that didn't have problems. I tried the INTEL 320, it was defective, the OCZ Agility 3 would not run at full speed SATA II in the Macbook 2008 and finally the Samsung 470...it worked perfectly.

Now I have to figure out where all that "extra" data goes. I could add a second drive in my Macbook by replacing the DVD with another disk but I'm still thinking about that and it's impact on battery life. I have a great little external USB drive right now...It works well but it's cumbersome to drag it around....I don't see that as a long term plan.

My other approach is to set up my own "Personal Cloud". The "standard" offerings like Dropbox and Box.net are all good but they limit the amount of storage and you can't even get that much with a premium account. So, given that you can buy 1 Terabyte of disk for about $70, I am setting up a cloud of my own to test out. I am using Pogoplug software which sets up a storage cloud and has clients for iOS, Mac, Windows and Android....sweet. We's see if that works...but I like what I see so far.

I will also look at switching primarily to Spotify for my music.

iCloud is on it's way and maybe it will solve this in another way....but I'm pretty sure there won't be an Android client ;)

More later as I inch along the path....

Re: So Long Laptops and PC’s! I have been curious about them, but had not checked them out. I still love my iPhone and now have an iPad as well. I'm looking forward to the iPhone 5 announcement, since I have so much stuff on my iPhone 3GS that needs a little more performance. I am also really looking forward to the higher resolution display.

I've learned quite a bit about Macs. I'm helping a friend with her new clinic network and computers, and she has about half Macs (4 or 5 of them). They are nice boxes, but I'm still a windows man. I have so much software that is not available for Mac.

So, I have settled on IOS for portable devices and Windows for desktops and laptops. I have found that I don't use my laptop much any more, I enjoy my iPad a lot and can sit around anywhere in the house and read on it. So, my next laptop will be a less expensive one, and I will not buy them so often. But my desktop is a mega-computer with 8GB RAM and 6TB hard disk.

It's amazing what cool stuff we have to play with these days.

Re: iCal Floating Time Zones – What/Why?

The error is that somebody sent you an invite to a meeting, which presumably is attended by people in multiple time zones, and that person set the zone to "floating". Floating does not make sense for such a meeting which involves people from different time zones.

However, Floating IS IMPORTANT for those who want to view their calendar in only one time zone (e.g. they always consider their calendar to be LOCAL time). If I schedule a soccer game with friends at 4pm Saturday in San Diego, and I happen to go on a trip to Chicago during the week, I DON"T WANT to see that soccer game appear on my calendar at 6PM. That makes no sense whatsoever.

A better word for "Floating" would have been "LOCAL". Meaning that wherever I am at, the meeting or event is specified as Local Time. And thus, one should never schedule a meeting for people in different time zones as LOCAL.
